IIT Palakkad has faculty members with a strong research orientation and a focus on outreach and community development initiatives in and around Kerala. More than 300 Research and Development projects have been executed successfully by IIT Palakkad faculty members in various science, technology, and engineering fields.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Obligation:

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a trending concept that has gained utmost significance recently, especially in India, where industry/ companies are increasingly realizing their role in the development of society in the form of Corporate Social Responsibility spending. In India, CSR is mandatory under the Companies Act 2013.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is an initiative in accordance with the provision of Section 135 of the Indian Companies Act, 2013 (Schedule VII) and the related rules where all the corporate giants have to spend 2% of their average profit of the previous three years on CSR activities specified by the Govt. of India. Businesses are economic power banks of a nation that can bring transformational changes in the development and growth of an indigent section of society.  It is a way through which a company/corporation contributes towards economic, environmental, and social development that positively impacts society. 

The Act provides that CSR activities must be undertaken in areas such as promoting education, eradicating hunger and poverty, promoting gender equality, protecting the environment, and other areas or subjects, as specified in Schedule VII.

Companies can fulfill their CSR obligations by  providing contributions to public-funded Universities, Indian Institute of Technology (IITs); National Laboratories, and autonomous bodies established under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE); Department of Biotechnology (DBT); Department of Science and Technology (DST); Department of Pharmaceuticals; Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy (AYUSH); Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and other bodies, namely Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO); Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR); Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), engaged in conducting research in science, technology, engineering, and medicine aimed at promoting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)]

CSR Funding to IIT Palakkad:

IIT Palakkad is interested in joining hands with corporate companies/ industries and PSUs to raise Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds for conducting and supporting R&D projects. 

IIT Palakkad will help the corporate sector fulfill its corporate social responsibility obligation by utilizing these funds for various research and development projects, outreach, and community development activities.

Therefore, IIT Palakkad invites corporates/companies to donate/ grant their CSR funds to explore various possibilities for addressing socio-economic issues with the available resources and manpower at the institute. IIT Palakkad complies with all the mandates for receiving CSR funds from corporations. IIT Palakkad is registered under CSR for receiving CSR funds from the corporate sector/ industry and PSUs.

CSR Activities undertaken at IIT Palakkad:

  • Global Sanitation Center of Excellence(GSCOE) was established in Jan 2022 at IIT Palakkad. GSCOE is a center for collaborative and sustainable innovation, incubation, scaling manufacturing, skill development, training showcase, and deployment of Sanitation solutions. Technologies that provide a reduction in pollutants and pathogens, reduction in the use of vital resources and energy, improvement, and efficiency in recovery of nutrients, energy, creation of products and bi-products that can benefit the society and also provide livelihood, safe and clean sanitation would be the primary focus of the center. Funding partners for establishing and conducting GSCoE activities are:
  1. HDFC BANK CSR (the funding agency for the Incubation of teams under GSCOE)
  2. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation(BMGF)
  • During the last few years, IIT Palakkad has organized the following outreach programs to benefit the school children in and around Kerala. During the FY 2023-24 the following outreach programs were funded by M/s. TM Automotive Seating Systems Private Limited:
  1. The Science Quest Residential Programme aims to instill a spirit of inquiry, critical thinking, and love for science and mathematics in students.

  2. The Science Quest at the Doorstep (SQD):- This Programme is a new initiative proposed to develop a spirit of inquiry by taking practical science demonstrations to schools. This is intended to supplement the curriculum provided by various schools. It addresses the challenges of inadequate practical exercises in school curricula for various reasons.

  3. Math Circle:-  An outreach program that directly connects professional mathematicians with high school students. The purpose is twofold (1) to cultivate awareness and appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematical ideas towards understanding the world (2) To dispel anxiety and fear of mathematics among school students.

  • A few R&D projects at IIT Palakkad were funded and supported by M/s. Kerala Industrial Infrastructure (KINFRA) Development Corporation during the last few years.
  • Few research scholars were supported by M/s. Redpine Signals and M/s. Ceremorphic Inc., US, in the form of fellowships and scholarships for the last few years.
  • Recently, M/s. Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) agreed to fund one of the R&D Projects at IIT Palakkad.
