About IP Cell
The Intellectual Property (IP) Cell at IIT Palakkad aims to promote innovation, safeguard intellectual property, and facilitate technology transfer. We support faculty, researchers, and students in identifying, protecting, and commercializing their inventions through patents and other IP rights.
Patent Process at IIT Palakkad
1. Conceptualisation
Inventor(s) formulate the core idea and begin initial development of the invention.
2. Patentability Search
Inventors may contact the IP Cell to perform a patentability search or to obtain credentials and guidance for conducting the search independently.
3. IP Firm Referral
Once the search report is ready, the IP Cell shares contact details of one of the empanelled IP firms.
4. Patent Drafting and Filing
The inventor directly engages the chosen IP firm to draft and file the patent application.
5. Process Oversight & Assistance
The IP Cell oversees the process, provides all necessary documents, and offers continued support throughout.
Patent Search Database
The IP Cell at IIT Palakkad provides access to the professional patent database Orbit Intelligence/Express to support patent filings and technology commercialization.
- Before initiating a new research project, filing a patent, or starting product development, it is critical to assess the existing knowledge landscape. A thorough patent search helps in:
- Avoiding duplication of existing inventions
- Identifying white spaces for innovation
- Understanding trends and emerging technologies
- Evaluating freedom to operate (FTO)
- Assessing competitors’ activities
- Supporting high-quality patent drafting.
How to Access: The IP Cell provides access in the following two ways:
1. IP Cell-Assisted Search & Report Sharing
Any faculty member, research scholar or student may request a search by contacting the IP Cell. Upon request, the IP Cell will: Conduct the search based on keywords, technical descriptions, or invention summaries, and share the report with the concerned party.
2. Direct Access for Independent Use
On request, the IP Cell will provide login credentials to access the Orbit Express platform directly and the user can perform independent searches.
